UK rapeseed prices edge back on stronger sterling

UK rapeseed prices have fallen this week as the spectre of a no deal Brexit has diminished and so causing the pound to rise. Ex farm values for September are no better than £330 ex in England and £320 ex in Scotland.

EU Matif rapeseed prices have risen as margins remain good for rapeseed crushing and biodiesel production, but this has been outweighed by stronger sterling.

There is much conjecture regarding the size of autumn rapeseed plantings. Initially the area was expected to be down as some growers have become frustrated with flea beetle losses. However, ideal moisture conditions have allowed much better establishment than last year and we may yet be pleasantly surprised by the area drilled. As a guide, prices are about £10 lower for next season than the corresponding period for this season.
