Rothamsted Research is asking growers to submit CSFB samples for ongoing research. Dead or alive, we want your beetles!
While cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB) numbers are generally low across most areas, growers in regions with higher pressure should expect to see some adult activity as beetles begin emerging from the soil following recent moisture. CSFB is now an established pest and is here to stay, but growers also have more tools and management options available to help keep populations at manageable levels. Samples are used to assess:
- Pyrethroid resistance
- Levels of natural parasitism by beneficial insects
In return, you'll receive information from your own sample, helping you better understand the CSFB population on your farm. The work could also improve our understanding of whether naturally occurring parasitoids are already providing some control, and how management decisions may influence these beneficial insects.
How to take part
- Collect 150–250 live or dead adult CSFB (or as many as possible).
- Place them in a ventilated, crush-proof container with a little dry tissue.
- Put the container inside a zip-lock bag and padded envelope.
- Clearly mark the envelope: "LIVING CREATURES (Non-harmful) – HANDLE WITH CARE."
