Volatile markets struggling for direction

Posted: 7 Feb

UK rapeseed prices remain subdued as the spectre of coronavirus remains over the market.  Prices in England are between £320 to £325 ex farm, whilst there is a £10/tonne discount for Scotland. Matif prices have rebounded from recent lows, but the May Matif premium over the August and November positions is narrowing. Hence old crop prices have fallen faster than new crop.

Harvest prices in England are valued at around £315.00 ex farm, but with few sellers as growers continue to worry about crop conditions going forward.

One major market worth careful watching is the palm oil market, which initially lost 9% in value on coronavirus fears, but then has regained 8% as palm oil stocks remain very tight. Palm oil is being sought for biodiesel and it is not thought that stocks will start to replenish until June.
