Oilseed Rape and Linseed
An analysis of the variable costs versus gross output for a range of cropping options shows that oilseed rape is set to remain as one of the most profitable spring sown crops this year.
The forecasted gross margin for spring rape is down a little from the levels seen for harvest 2011 due to a drop in oilseed rape prices. However forecast margins for spring oilseed rape is £513 per hectare and that for linseed £528 per hectare.
For many farmers, a spring sown crop of pulses may provide a viable alternative to oilseeds especially when one bears in mind the fact that the legume will leave behind approximately 40kg per hectare of Nitrogen for the following crop.
