Merit rating
With over 40 varieties available in the market, and considerable variation in trial data, choosing a variety has never been more difficult, or more critical. Although yield and gross output are key factors to consider, agronomic characteristics such as standing ability and disease resistance are of equal importance. Combining these measurements as one score for each variety provides a guide to assess performance.
Whilst standing ability and yield is of equal importance throughout the UK, resistance to disease is not. The dominant disease in the HGCA “Northern” region is Light Leaf Spot, and in the “Southern” region is Stem Canker. These are weighted accordingly in a merit rating depending on the region where the crop is grown.
