Jim Huntley achieves 5.3 t/ha Barbados OSR yield

Date Added: 23/08/2016

Grower Jim Huntley has achieved a hugely impressive yield of 5.31 tonnes per hectare with Barbados oilseed rape at his farm near Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Mr Huntley harvested 13 hectares of his Barbados seed crop on the 8th August and is very impressed with the variety’s performance.

“We knew it was going to be a high yield as we started harvesting the crop and the weighbridge subsequently confirmed that we had achieved over 5 t/ha,” he said.

“We drilled the Barbados on 8th September last year and it established well.  It grew into a stiff and even crop and showed little or no lodging throughout the year.  It also showed impressive pod fill and was very clean.  Fortunately, it did not experience any slug damage,” he continued.

Barbados is a conventional variety from seed breeder KWS and has an exceptional gross output of 109%. Though it is on the AHDB’s Recommended List for the North, it offers growers in other regions good resistance to stem canker and light leaf spot, as it possesses “7” ratings against both diseases.
