Rapeseed markets overshadowed by wheat

Date Added: 19/12/2014

This week rapeseed markets, although stronger have continued to be quiet. Most attention has been on the wild movements on the wheat market as reports of Russian export restrictions have impacted this market.

Rapeseed prices have been firming, reaching £255.00 ex in many areas as crushers still need to cover January and February and farmer selling is limited. Interestingly, farmer selling is also very reserved on the continent and the comparison between Matif Wheat at 200 euros and Matif rapeseed at 347.50 is showing a historically high wheat price compared to rape, rape can be twice the value of wheat. This also suggests farmers will be reluctant sellers, but this may lead higher than expected stocks at the end the marketing year which may ultimately prove bearish.

Owen
