Claire Perry MP Opens United Oilseeds Head Office

Date Added: 07/03/2014

The United Oilseeds new Head Office  was opened today by local Devizes MP, Claire Perry.

United Oilseeds, which has been based in Devizes since 1972, has grown to become one of the UK's most successful agricultural co-operatives. The company specialises in selling oilseed rapeseed to farmers and marketing their crops.

During her visit, Claire Perry met staff and unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion at the company's new St James House premises in Gains Lane. Previously, the company was based at Nursteed Trading Estate.

"As part of its investment for the future, United Oilseeds has purchased its own Headquarters in Devizes and believes it is an excellent base from which to continue expanding the business. We are delighted that Claire has been able to visit us and officially usher in a new era for our organisation," said Chris Baldwin, Managing Director, United Oilseeds.

United Oilseeds has become one of Wiltshire's and the UK agricultural sector's success stories. Last  November it reported a 47% growth in pre-tax profits to £1.8m and an annual turnover of £241m. Over the last eight years, it has made profit redistributions to its farmer members totalling over £2.57m.

Over the last five years, turnover has increased by an annual average of 30% whilst the volume of oilseed rape tonnes the company has traded has increased by an annual average of 19%. It employs 30 people (20 in Devizes) and has 4,200 farmer members based throughout the country.

United Oilseed has grown considerably since it was founded in the 1960s and now supplies 30% of all certified oilseed rapeseed planted in Britain and markets 25% of the country's entire crop.

At the end of 2013, the London Stock Exchange named United Oilseeds one of "1000 UK companies to inspire Britain."
