Hampshire Farmer Wins Charger Competition

Date Added: 02/08/2013

Hampshire farm manager, Mike Goodenough is the lucky winner of a new 46" widescreen TV.

He was the first name drawn from the hat following the launch meeting of the United Oilseeds Charger Club earlier in the summer.

Managing 4200 acres for EC Drummond on the Manydown Estate, at Wooton St Lawrence, Mr Goodenough grows around 1000 acres of oilseed rape every year. He's looking for a mix of early, medium and late maturing, lower biomass varieties that give him the best chance to counteract pigeon damage.

"We'll be looking for Charger to slot in alongside DK Cabernet, PR46W21 and a Pioneer semi-dwarf this autumn," he says.

"Whereas we have been around two-thirds hybrids in the past, we are rethinking this based on the ability to play around with the seed rate of conventionals to gain good coverage and help with the pigeon problem.

"Charger appears to have good early vigour in trials and its yields - on paper at least - mean it ticks a number of the right boxes."

Mr Goodenough aims to drill all his oilseed rape around the 10-15th August and last year, like many had to redrill an area with spring rape.  Going forward, he's reintroducing winter barley to help gain a better entry for the crop in a rotation that aims to grow oilseeds every fifth year.

According to United Oilseeds' SE area manager, Ian Pugh, Charger - which is up for recommendation this autumn - has been quick to sell out this autumn.

"Growers have been keen to try what is the current front runner for gross output in National List trials," he says. "They have also been encouraged by its earliness and lower biomass in trial and we will be following this season's crops with interest."

The TV - presented to him by KWS UK oilseed rape manager Tom Dummett and Ian Pugh will be pride of place in the Goodenough's lounge at home.

"We're not the only one pleased by the prize," he says. "My in-laws will get our old TV, so I get to keep them happy as well!"
