EU and Neonicontinoid Seed Dressings

Date Added: 14/02/2013

  • On 15 March 2013, EU Member States will vote on whether to restrict the use of neonicontinoid seed treatments in the UK
  • Seed treaments containing neonicotinoids have been used on millions of hectares of crops for over a decade, but some groups allege they adversely affect bee health
  • It is estimated that without the use of neonicontioid seed treatments, grower margins may be eroded and crop yields from barley, maize, oilseed rape, sugar beet and winter wheat could fall by up to 40%.
  • Over five years a ban on the use of neonicotinoids could cost the farming industry and the broader EU economy up to £14 billion.
