Northants Farmer Wins Paris Trip

Date Added: 04/09/2009

Anthony Middleton of Coppicemoor Farm, Pytchley, Northants won the KWS/United Oilseeds, Eiffel oilseed rape competition.

He and his wife Pauline will be enjoying an expenses paid trip to Paris travelling on Eurostar including lunch at the Eiffel Tower at the renowned Jules Verne restaurant.

Farming around 1,500 acres around Kettering, Anthony Middleton has been growing rape for 36 years. The family partnership also runs a successful contracting business - including rape swathing.

"We were delighted when we got the phone call, we never win anything and instead of our planned trip to Norfolk in September, we are looking forward to Paris instead," he said. Mr Middleton is no stranger to Paris, having first been there as a boy scout in 1955.

Growing around 500 acres of rape, he's been well pleased with the crop's performance this harvest. "One September 28th drilled crop did 28cwt and it appears as if the prolonged flowering period helped make up for difficult growing conditions last year," he says.

Next year's rapes will include 50 acres of the Recommended List candidate Eiffel, which in trials has one of the best combinations of lodging resistance and straw strength available, ensuring an excellent canopy biomass.
