German Study Uncovers Secrets of Hybrid Breeding

Date Added: 27/04/2009

A contingent of nine members of the United Oilseeds support team have recently returned from a two day trip to Germany. The study tour was hosted by German seed breeder DSV and included visits to the company's seed breeding and trial plot facilities.

DSV (Deutsche Saatveredelung AG) is one of the leading German plant breeding companies and specialises in the breeding and development of hybrid varieties including Flash, Hammer and Dimension. The company, which has its headquarters at Lippstadt in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, has several branches throughout the world, including some of the most modern and well equipped breeding and crop testing stations.

The purpose of the United Oilseeds visit was to provide an insight into how hybrid varieties are bred and tested, and what the research being carried out by DSV across Europe means for British growers.

Dr Heino Schaupp of DSV Germany, and Mike Mann, director of marketing and sales for DSV in the UK, provided a detailed insight into how new hybrids varieties are brought to the UK market. Topics discussed included a comprehensive look at how early generation varieties are tested before being put forward as candidates, as well as a detailed view of DSV's plant breeding programme.

The tour also provided an opportunity for the United Oilseeds team to inspect DSV's trial plots located near the small towns of Thule and Salzkotten.

"The DSV facilities at Paderborn and Thule are second to none," describes Richard Elsdon, technical manager for United Oilseeds. "It is remarkable to see how much time, effort and energy goes into producing the next generation of oilseed varieties. The level of investment involved is also very impressive. DSV devotes all of its attention to developing new and improved hybrids and is currently working on some very interesting new varieties which will offer even better yields, oil content and disease resistance."

"Trips such as this are invaluable to the team at United Oilseeds," Mr Elsdon continues. "By taking the time to find out more about how hybrids are developed, we are better equipped to advise our farmers on which are the best seed varieties for a specific set of conditions."
