2006 Harvest progress
Early yield results remain patchy, and its too early to get any overall indication. However with soaring temperatures the need to cool and condition any samples has never been as critical. At the same time some growers have reported moisture levels of less than 6%.
Information on dealing with low moisture rape can be found in the agronomy section of the downloads page. CLICK HERE

NFC9/EFC9
Forms for notifying DEFRA and SEERAD of tonnages delivered under these schemes must be returned by the 9th February 2006.
When completing them please ensure United Oilseeds details are listed as first processor. Our SBI/BRN number is 107 344 319.
It would also be advisable to complete your own SBI number on both sheets as stapled copies have a habit of becoming detached!
Please remember to use the right full crop code RA for rapeseed, and 001 & 002 for spring and winter double low varieties respectively - despite there being insufficient spaces on the form.
For spring Nexera - high oleic/low linolenic please complete 005. These new codings for 2006 will be published in our spring booklet & are written on your 2006 contracts.
For further advice on the completion of such forms please contact your local Area Manager.

PHOMA LEAF SPOT
Phoma leaf spot has continued to increase rapidly and is a priority for treatment as it can seriously effect yields.
High incidence of spore release 2-3 weeks ago has resulted in new infections. Larger leaves with several spots per leaf are at particular risk. Crops with more than 75% plants affected are not unusual.
Indications from TAG & ADAS are that there is some regional variation in phoma activity, reflecting rainfall patterns over the past month. Phoma growth down the petiole has been re-evaulated at Rothamsted showing growth rates of about 1 mm per day, as such a few days delay in applying fungicide should not affect control and this has been confirmed in spray timing experiments in the PASSWORD project.
The priority should be to spray crops with small plants of susceptible varieties first. Where plants are small and sprays are delayed by the weather, consider increasing fungicide dose to improve curative activity.
Weekly regional reports on spore release and disease progress prepared by ADAS are available on Syngenta’s SPAWS website:

PEST WARNING
SLUGS - We are now receiving reports of extremely high levels of slug damage in some areas. A number of crops have required multiple treatments with pellets, and redrilling is underway in a number of locations. Please check your crops frequently and treat with an approved molluscicide where necessary.
CABBAGE STEM FLEA BEETLE - Damage to emerging and small plants is occurring, particularly on those crops not protected by a seed treatement. The feeding damage can appear minor, but growth can be slowed significantly, this can result in smaller plants overwintering. Monitor damage levels on late emerging crops and treat where necessary to prevent later larval damage.
For further information contact your local Area Manager.

CAUTION NOTICE FOR FARM SAVED SEED
If you are intending to home save rapeseed and you've desicated with Roundup, please read the label carefully. Glyphosate should not be used on seed crops.
With increasing workloads, many farmers may have forgotten this important point.
Glyphosate affects germination by producing some abnormal seedlings with shorter, stumpier roots and fewer root hairs. In some instances the roots can grow upwards - 'negative geotropism'. Altering the seedling's physiology could adversely affect vigour and subsequent crop establishment.
A good germination test result is not necessarily an indication that the seed quality is unaffected.
Certified seed crops are never sprayed with Roundup.
If you intend to farm save seed from a crop that has been sprayed, always:
- Check germination using an Official Seed Testing Organisation
- Choose a full germination rather than the rapid 'Tetrazolium test'
- Inform the testing company that it has been sprayed with Roundup. They will change their methodology to a compost-based germination test as well as a paper towel test & will look specifically for abnormal growth effects
- Be aware that there is still an increased risk to crop establishment
This goes some way to explaining the yield differences we have detected between crops grown from farm saved and those from
certified seed crops.
Please remember that it is illegal to trade uncertified seed between different holdings.
Planting quality seed is the foundation of crop production. For further information contact your local Area Manager.

2005 Harvest Results
Harvest is making good progress. Overall, yields look to be good, and official trial results are now available at;
To help guide our members in selecting the most suitable variety, United Oilseeds contracts record information such as variety planted and whether the crop is grown exclusively from certified seed. This is producing some useful information drawn from the results our members are achieving.
Whilst there is a considerable acreage still to combin, and tonnages so far are just a small sample, these results do mirror those seen in trials. The importance of resistance to stem canker is increasingly evident as well as the need for certified seed as the foundation of crop production.
For further information on the latest local results contact your local Area Manager.
